Spring Membership Gathering – Online

Saturday, May 17, 2025, from 1 PM – 4 PM on Zoom

The Green Party of Washington State will hold our Spring Gathering to consider proposals and to accept nominations for our Coordinating Council and GPUS delegations.

RSVP below for the Zoom link!

Agenda:

1 PM – Education Justice in Washington State – With schools underfunded, federal protections stripped away, and working families left behind, it’s time to organize! We will hear from Green Party NEWA organizer Cody Mahar-Kjos and special guest Katy Purviance, founder of Washington State’s only outdoor Self-Directed Education center, the Spokane Learning Co-op:

Katy’s vision began in 2005 with a simple dream: a school in the woods where kids could be wild, curious, and fully themselves—especially those who didn’t fit the mold of traditional education.

While studying architecture at Harvard, Katy found herself burned out and disillusioned. A 20-credit course load, little connection to her passions, and a sense of deep misalignment led her to discover the work of John Taylor Gatto. His radical critique of schooling lit a fire in her. She dropped out, devoured everything she could on alternative education, and went on to teach in five countries. No matter where she went, the pattern was the same: obedience over curiosity, control over joy.

Katy realized school wasn’t broken—it was doing exactly what it was designed to do. Reform wasn’t enough. So she built something different.

At the Spokane Learning Co-op, learning is driven by the child, supported by a community, and rooted in trust, freedom, and wonder. Katy’s work is part of a growing movement to reimagine education—not just for some kids, but for all.

2:00 PM – Opportunity drawing – we are giving away 2 tickets to see comedian Ron Placone in Seattle on Friday, May 23rd!

2:15 PM – Consider resolution and proposed amendment to GPWA bylaws – sponsored by Cody Mahar-Kjos, Michael Doyle, Oceana Baker, and Giuliana Natale.

Please review this proposal before the meeting:  Resolution Calling for Immediate Enforcement of GPWA Bylaws, Review of Coordinating Council Membership Eligibility, and Special Elections for Leadership Accountability.

We will vote on the proposed bylaw amendment at the Spring Gathering. Bylaw amendments may be adopted by a 70% vote of members present.

3 PM – Nominate Green Party members for open positions on the GPWA Coordinating Council and GPUS delegation.

You may nominate members for these positions until the close of the Spring Gathering. In making nominations, members should strive for diversity in as many areas as possible, including but not limited to race, gender, and geography.

We will also accept volunteers to help conduct the online election via OpaVote.

All Green Party members will be invited to vote for the Coordinating Council and GPUS delegation. Voting will be conducted via online ballot and administered by OpaVote. The voting period will be from May 24 to June 7.

Please check your membership status before the meeting. If your membership has lapsed, you can renew it here.
