The EcoAction Committee of the Green Party of the U.S. will hold a webinar forum on Monday, April 10 about the importance of this year’s Earth Day to May Day activities. The event, which begins at 5:00 PM PT, is part of the national day to build the Green Party. RSVP is required.
The webinar will outline how green activists can build support for system change, not climate change, by organizing local educational events, protests, vigils, social media, LTE, call-ins, etc. from Earth Day (April 22) to May Day.
An important part is building solidarity among the various movement demanding systemic change, such as Black Lives Matter, women’s rights, GLBQT, rights of nature, public power, peace, and worker and immigrant rights.
Speakers on April 10 will address the need for the climate movement to be more anti-capitalist, as well as the need for an Ecosocialist Green New Deal; biodiversity / RON; ending single-use plastics and halting fossil fuels; the role of the military on climate; and, how to promote Green living.
Speakers include Mark Dunlea, co-chair of EcoAction and author of Putting Out the Planetary Fire (link for free internet/pdf copy); Dawn Marie Cronen, co-chair of EcoAction, speaking on Green Living; and Prof. David Schwartzman, EcoAction member from DC and climate scientist, speaking on climate change and the military.
We need system change, not climate change. Another World is essential to the future of humanity. Please join us in this struggle by organizing events to highlight, “People, Planet and Peace over Profit.” The EcoAction Committee of the Green Party of the United States wants to help you organize rallies, forums, direct actions, and call-ins to demand change from April 22 to May 1.
The United Nations has sounded the alarm that the steps taken by governments since the Paris Climate Accords six years ago are grossly inadequate to prevent climate collapse – or even to keep global warming below 1.5 degrees C. At the present rate of emissions, we will use up our “remaining carbon budget” in 6 years. We need to act now, not call for fake goals such as net zero by 2050.
In 2010, the Green Party of the United States launched a call for an ecosocialist Green New Deal (GND). We understood that in order to accomplish a rapid, ten-year transition to clean renewable energy and zero greenhouse gas emissions, the effort needed to transform to a society based on social and economic justice for everyone: no one must be left behind. It needs to embrace an Economic Bill of Rights based on a guaranteed living-wage job and income, expanded and improved Medicare for All, affordable housing, and education. We must end capitalism and replace it with a commitment to the common good and democratic control and public/community/worker ownership of our economy.
Movements for democracy & justice are rising up at home and around the globe – Black Lives Matter; resistance to student debt & school-to-prison pipelines; movements for the rights of workers, immigrants, women, LGBTQ & Indigenous peoples; for sustainable food, water, & renewable energy; Rights of Nature; uprisings against tar sands, fracking, nuclear power, GMOs & more. The accelerating climate collapse intensifies all of these struggles and provides new urgency for collaboration & action.
We have the solutions to build a sustainable world – what we lack is the political will to do so. As former President Eisenhower warned, 0ur political leaders are subservient to the military-industrial complex that always seek new wars – in the Middle East, Ukraine, South America – and conflicts with China and Russia. The bloated material budget needs to be slashed at least in half and redirected to human needs and the transition to a clean energy future. End war and imperialism.
EcoAction seeks to work in collaboration with the many movements working for fundamental system change as part of the Earth Day to May Day effort.
